At every World Cup, the same thing happens. African teams show promise. The media says they are “physical” and “athletic” code for: they run fast but they cannot think. They get talked about as underdogs. Dark horses. Nice stories. And then European and South American teams knock them out, and the world moves on.

Not this time.

The 2026 World Cup, the expanded, 48-team version that critics said would dilute quality, has instead become the stage where African football has announced itself louder than at any point in history. And the scary part? The knockout rounds have not even started yet.

Let that number sit. Seven. From one continent. In a single tournament. Morocco reached the semi-finals in 2022 and the world called it a miracle. Now it is looking like a preview.

The Cape Verde story: how a tiny island nation sent Uruguay home

Let us talk about the one nobody saw coming. Cape Verde, population 600,000, smaller than Nairobi, qualified for their first ever World Cup and proceeded to go unbeaten through the entire group stage against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.

Their goalkeeper Vozinha became a global name overnight after stonewalling Spain in the opener – one of the tournament’s most dominant goalkeeping performances. Then against Uruguay, they scored first through Kevin Pina’s stunning free-kick, went 2-1 down, and came back to draw 2-2 when Fernando Muslera, Uruguay’s veteran goalkeeper, inexplicably raced out of his goal and gift-wrapped an equaliser. Uruguay, two-time world champions, with Valverde, Núñez, Bentancur, and Araújo eliminated by an island nation making its World Cup debut.

Three draws. Three points. Round of 32. And now they face Argentina, Messi’s Argentina, the defending champions, in the knockout stage. They are already the story of the tournament. But here is the thing nobody is saying: they actually have a goalkeeper who can win them that game. Vozinha has already proven he can shut out Spain. Why not Argentina?

Senegal’s 5-0: a record nobody is talking about enough

Before June 26, 2026, no African nation had ever scored five goals in a single World Cup match. Ever. Not Ghana’s “Black Stars” generation. Not the Cameroon side that shocked Argentina in 1990. Not Morocco’s 2022 team. In 94 years of World Cup football, it had never happened.

Then Senegal walked into BMO Field in Toronto against Iraq needing a massive win just to stay alive – having lost their first two group games – and did exactly that. 5-0.

The goals came from Habib Diarra, Ismaïla Sarr, then substitute Pape Gueye with two in 12 minutes, one of them clocked at 132km/h, and Iliman Ndiaye with a thunderstrike from distance in the 82nd minute. Iraq were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute after a VAR red card on Rebin Sulaka. But even then, Senegal had to fight for that scoreline in the second half. It was not handed to them.

Ismaïla Sarr is now the outright top scorer in Senegal’s World Cup history with four goals. Pape Gueye became only the second African player ever to score twice as a substitute at a World Cup, after the legendary Roger Milla of Cameroon in 1990. And Senegal set the record for the biggest-ever African win in World Cup history in a single game.

As things stand, they are on course to face England in Atlanta on July 1. England, who could not score against Ghana with 79% possession. Senegal, who just scored five. Tell me that is not a story.

South Africa: the quiet giant nobody is watching

While Senegal was making noise and Cape Verde was breaking hearts, South Africa quietly did something that had never happened in 32 years of their World Cup participation: they won a knockout game to reach the Round of 32.

Bafana Bafana’s unexpected 1-0 win against South Korea officially advanced them to the Round of 32, the first time in history South Africa have reached the knockout rounds. They lost their opener to Mexico 2-0 and drew with Czechia. But when it mattered, they found a way. They face Canada next, a co-host nation playing in front of their home crowd in Los Angeles. Most people would say Canada are favourites. Most people probably said the same thing about South Korea.

The scary truth European media will not say out loud

Here it is. The thing being danced around in press boxes from London to Madrid to Paris.

African football has closed the gap. Not just in athleticism – that narrative was always lazy, but in organisation, tactical discipline, squad depth, and mental toughness. Morocco proved it in 2022 by reaching the semi-finals. This tournament is proving it across ten teams simultaneously.

Ghana held England to 0-0 with less than a quarter of the ball. DR Congo held Portugal to a draw. Ivory Coast beat Ecuador. Cape Verde held Spain. These are not accidents. These are teams that came prepared, organised, and hungry in a way that many European sides, comfortable in their continental dominance, simply are not.

And the expanded format has not “watered down” the tournament as critics said it would. It has simply given more African teams the chance to show what was already there. Seven of ten African teams reaching the knockouts is not luck. It is a statement.
