The University of Nairobi (UoN) is once again Kenya’s highest-ranked university after reclaiming the top spot in the latest global rankings released by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR).
According to the 2026 CWUR Global 2000 rankings, UoN placed 1,425th out of 21,291 universities assessed worldwide, earning a place among the top seven per cent of universities on the planet.
The ranking also places the institution 37th in Africa, making it one of the continent’s leading universities in research, academic excellence and graduate outcomes.
The achievement means UoN has overtaken Kenyatta University to return to the summit of Kenyan higher education.
For many Kenyans, the news comes as confirmation that the “University of Nairobi brand” remains strong. In fact, some former students are already joking that they willingly spent four years studying courses their relatives still can’t explain at family gatherings simply because they wanted to say, “Nilisoma UON.”
Some even joke that while their friends pursued highly marketable careers elsewhere, they chose the prestige route, earning degrees in subjects that require a PowerPoint presentation every Christmas to explain what exactly they do.
Jokes aside, the ranking is a significant achievement for the institution.
In a statement, the university said the recognition reflects the quality of its teaching, research and the competitiveness of its graduates both locally and internationally.
“The University of Nairobi is now ranked among the top 7 per cent of universities globally,” the institution noted.
The university performed particularly well in research, where it ranked 1,371st worldwide, while its graduate employability ranking stood at 1,596th globally.
Across Africa, South African institutions continued to dominate the rankings, with the University of the Witwatersrand emerging as the continent’s highest-ranked university. The University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University completed the top three.
Globally, Harvard University retained its position as the world’s best university, followed by MIT and Stanford University.
The CWUR rankings are based on measurable indicators including quality of education, alumni success, faculty achievements and research performance, rather than surveys or institutional submissions.
Whether you studied Medicine, Engineering, Law, Journalism, or a course that still leaves your aunties confused at family functions, one thing is now official: Kenya’s highest-ranked university is once again the University of Nairobi.
