Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or: Sometimes, Loyalty Is What Holds You Back

why Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or

Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, beating Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. But beyond the goals and trophies, his journey carries a lesson about ambition, courage and knowing when it is time to move on.

It Takes More Than Goals

The Ballon d’Or is not decided by goals and trophies alone. France Football uses three criteria, in order of importance: individual performances and a player’s decisive, impressive character; team performances and trophies won; and class and fair play. A player’s character matters, but not as a separate popularity contest: it is considered alongside how decisively they influence games, while sportsmanship and conduct also count. The award looks at the whole season, for club and country, rather than reputation alone. In other words, talent gets you into the conversation, but what you do with it, and how you carry yourself, helps shape your legacy.

For years, Harry Kane was Tottenham Hotspur’s main man. He scored the goals, broke records and became one of the Premier League’s finest strikers. Yet the biggest team trophies and football’s most prestigious individual award remained out of reach.

Then came Bayern Munich.

Kane left Spurs in 2023, aged 30, to pursue the trophies that had eluded him in England. Three years later, at 33, he has won the Ballon d’Or after scoring 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 season.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé finished second and Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal came third.

The lesson? Sometimes, you must have the courage to leave what is familiar to discover what you are capable of becoming.

Loyalty is admirable, but it should not become a prison. You can love your club, employer or environment and still recognise that you need a new challenge. Staying is not always commitment; sometimes, it is fear of the unknown wearing a loyalty badge.

Kane did not win simply because he left Tottenham. He still had to deliver on the pitch. Bayern provided a new environment, but he supplied the goals, consistency and performances that earned the recognition.

That distinction matters. The right environment will not do the work for you, but it can help your work reach its full potential.

And age? Kane has answered that one himself. At 33, he has reached a career milestone many players dream about. You are not necessarily too old, too late or too far behind. Sometimes, you just need the courage to make a different move.

Ballon d’Or 2026: The Major Winners

The ceremony in London celebrated outstanding performances across men’s and women’s football.

Men’s awards

  • Men’s Ballon d’Or: Harry Kane — Bayern Munich
  • Men’s Striker of the Year: Harry Kane
  • Men’s Young Talent of the Year: Lamine Yamal — Barcelona
  • Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year: Unai Simón — Athletic Club
  • Men’s Coach of the Year: Luis de la Fuente — Spain
  • Men’s Club of the Year: Paris Saint-Germain
  • Sócrates Award: Bukayo Saka — recognising humanitarian work and social initiatives

Women’s football takes centre stage, too

Spain’s Alexia Putellas won her third Women’s Ballon d’Or, having previously claimed the award in 2021 and 2022. Barcelona’s women also had plenty to celebrate.

Vicky López won the Women’s Young Talent of the Year award for the second consecutive year, following her 2025 triumph. Barcelona’s Cata Coll won Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, while coach Pere Romeu was named Women’s Coach of the Year. Barcelona also won Women’s Club of the Year.

The women’s awards deserve more than a passing mention. They also raise a question football fans should be willing to confront.

Why Isn’t Women’s Football Bigger?

Here is the sarcasm: people will ask why women’s football does not attract the same audience as men’s football while giving it less airtime, less promotion and, in many places, less investment. Then they act surprised when the audience is smaller. More women should support women football, just as men support men football.

Why do women earn more than men in fashion? The answer lies in this question

The Bigger Lesson

Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or is about more than a striker finally getting his hands on football’s biggest individual prize. It is a reminder that growth sometimes demands uncomfortable decisions.

Know your worth. Find the right environment. Build relationships with people who help you become better, and be the kind of person who helps others grow, too.

And if your current situation no longer gives you room to reach your potential, have the courage to consider another path.

Loyalty is a virtue. But never let it cost you your growth. – Uradi News
