Idris Elba: ‘Don’t try to make James Bond woke’

Idris Elba on featuring as next James Bond

British actor and filmmaker Sir Idris Elba has weighed in on the long-running debate surrounding the future of James Bond, arguing that the iconic spy franchise movie should avoid changing its identity simply to satisfy modern trends.

Sir Idris, who was knighted by King Charles III for his services to drama and charity, has been linked to the role of 007 for more than a decade. However, the actor says he was never seriously in the running despite persistent speculation from fans and media.

Speaking to GQ, Elba said he appreciated the support but believes Bond should remain true to the character’s original identity.

“Bond was written how he was written for a reason,” he said, adding that while some reality can be introduced into the stories, the franchise should not try too hard to reflect every modern social debate.

The actor also pointed out that James Bond is one of the most recognizable characters in global entertainment, and changing core aspects of the character may not be embraced equally across all audiences and cultures.

The debate over casting has become increasingly common in Hollywood, with fans often divided over whether iconic characters should be significantly reimagined.

Many argue that some roles are closely tied to the identity of the original character. For example, audiences would likely struggle to imagine a white actor playing Marvel’s Black Panther, a character deeply rooted in African culture and history. Similarly, recasting Blade, portrayed famously by Wesley Snipes with a white actor would likely spark controversy.

The same argument is often made in reverse. Fans might question a black actor portraying characters such as Superman’s Clark Kent, Harry Potter, or Captain America if the adaptation is intended to remain faithful to the original source material.

At the same time, Elba noted that not every character is defined by race. Speaking about his role as Man-At-Arms in the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, he joked that the original animated character looked nothing like him.

“Man-At-Arms could be any colour,” Elba said, noting that the character’s defining traits have little to do with race.

The comments come as the search for the next James Bond intensifies. It has now been five years since Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007 in No Time To Die.

The next Bond film is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been confirmed as the screenwriter.

Several actors continue to be linked with the role, including Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Callum Turner, though no official announcement has been made.

For now, one thing remains certain: whoever lands the role will inherit one of cinema’s most iconic characters – and one of Hollywood’s most scrutinized casting decisions.
