Buying a car isn’t just about looks or horsepower – it’s about reliability.
The latest J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study has ranked the world’s most reliable car brands, and while Japanese manufacturers continue to dominate, one luxury brand has once again taken the crown.
For the fourth consecutive year, Lexus was named the most dependable car brand, recording the fewest problems reported by owners over three years of vehicle ownership.
Toyota, Subaru and Nissan all performed well, reinforcing Japan’s long-standing reputation for building reliable vehicles. Hyundai, BMW, Genesis, Mitsubishi and Mazda also finished above or close to the industry average.
For many Kenyan motorists, this comes as little surprise. Toyota remains one of the country’s most popular brands thanks to its durability, affordable maintenance and wide availability of spare parts.
Modern Cars Have a New Problem
While engines and transmissions have become more dependable, today’s biggest headaches are no longer mechanical.
Instead, drivers are increasingly frustrated by technology.
According to the study, infotainment systems, touchscreens and smartphone connectivity issues, particularly Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were the most commonly reported problems for the third straight year.
As cars become more connected and software-driven, reliability is no longer just about the engine under the bonnet.
Hybrid Cars Struggle
One surprising finding was that plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) recorded the highest number of owner complaints among all powertrains.
Traditional petrol-powered vehicles actually proved more dependable overall, suggesting that simpler technology still has an advantage when it comes to long-term reliability.
Which Brands Had the Most Problems?
At the opposite end of the rankings, Volkswagen, Volvo and Land Rover reported the highest number of owner complaints, with Volkswagen recording the weakest reliability score in the study.
That doesn’t necessarily mean every model from those manufacturers is unreliable, but owners reported significantly more issues than the industry average.
What It Means for Kenyan Buyers
If you’re shopping for a used import or planning your next vehicle purchase, reliability should be one of the biggest factors to consider.
The 2026 rankings once again show that Japanese brands continue to deliver dependable vehicles, while premium brands like Lexus prove that luxury and reliability can go hand in hand.
As modern cars become packed with digital features, buyers may also want to pay closer attention to software quality – not just engine performance – because today’s biggest breakdown might not be under the hood, but on the dashboard.
